Jennifer Tumminelli
Jennifer Tumminelli has quickly made her mark in Auto Racing. With her
"aggressive, no-fear driving style" she attracts audiences world-wide.
A young single mom at age 20 and with little money she waited till her
daughter was seven and old enough to bring to the race track. In 1993, she
started out as a crew person and worked her way up to become a mechanic and
helped her team win back-to-back championship and in return she earned
herself a ride. With a huge desire and no racing experience she
won her first race. She went on to win her first Autocross, Time-Trial and
took the pole at her very first wheel-to-wheel Porsche race.
In 1995, surprising her dad with her immediate talent he enrolled her into
the SCCA Driving School in an effort for her to gain a SCCA Racing License.
Sidelined all weekend with a broken car she failed to meet the six hour
requirement of on-track instruction. At the final hour of the weekend they
scrambled to get the car entered for the final race. The engine fired up
but then the next hurdle was to get the officials to allow her to race -
she hadn't met the licensed criteria. Several officials were brought in for
a brief meeting. The officials put her in the back of the grid. Her dad
told her to take it easy on the car because it was only a temporary fix.
All instructors eyes were on Jennifer. She went on to take the pole and win
in the rain against 31 drivers in the SCCA Driver's School. She became the
first female in No. California to win.
In 1999, receiving an invitation from Lyn St. James to compete in the
first-ever Women's try-outs. Attracting nearly 100 women to the try-outs,
Jennifer completed a rigorous full day session of physical, mental and media
tests. With no-track experience at Road Atlanta she and every other 60 drivers were put to the
test in a 3 lap time trial session. Jennifer finished 12th overall out of
60 women at the WGGT Try-outs finishing ahead of Shawna Robinson and Sara
Senske and one position behind Allison Duncan. Jennifer was selected to the
Women's Global GT Series.
At the inaugural Women's Global GT Series, Jennifer made history becoming
the first women to win the qualifying heat race and led the most laps.
Jennifer went on to be the first WGGT Driver to take the first pole in the
main inaugural race event on April 18, 1999. Making history once again,
Jennifer Tumminelli along with fast friend and Star Formula Mazda
competitor, Sara Senske went on to become the first two women in history to
compete in both the Star Formula Mazda Pro Series and Women's Global GT Pro
Series during a single race weekend. With less than 30 minutes between
sessions the two did on the road course what Janet Guthrie did on an oval in
1975. In 1999, one month later, Tony Stewart made headlines competing in
both the Indy 500 and flown several hours to a evening Nascar race. After
the race was over Tony collapsed in exhaustion getting out of his car.
In 2000, Jennifer returned to the American Le Mans Series and
competed in the main series and in a 2000 Porsche 996 GT3R.
