RACING
FOR KIDS
Racing For Kids is a non-profit organization founded in 1989 by William W.
Pinsky, M.D., the Vice president of Clinical Affairs at the Detroit Medical
Center. Dr. Pinsky, who is also an associate Dean at Wayne State University
School of Medicine, set out to use the increasing popularity of motorsports
to focus public attention and funding on the health care needs of
children. The Racing For Kids ‘team members’ visit sick kids at Children’s Hospitals
throughout the year. These visits occur on race weeks in the cities where
the drivers race. Since 1990, well over 70 hospitals have been visited
bringing joy to over 6,000 children. Fund-raisers are also held throughout
the year. To date, over $1.5 million has been raised for the benefit of the
children. Over 90% of the funds raised in the name of Racing For Kids are
distributed throughout the city in which they were raised.
Terri Hundertmark is beginning her fourth year visiting children in the
hospital and helping to raise funds as a member of the Racing For Kids team.
Since joining in 1997, Terri has been the sole female spokesperson of the
organization. She looks at Racing For Kids as a chance to give something
back.
“Racing for Kids is a very important program and part of my life,” according
to Terri. “I have been very fortunate in my life and have been able to do
some incredible things through the help of others. I appreciate the
opportunities that I have been given and want to do the same for the
children.” In early January of 1999, she organized a team of five other women in the
“Longest Night of Moroso” SCCA Pro racing endurance event at Moroso
Motorsports Park in Florida. The team competed in one of the quicker
classes in the multi-division event, the Spec Racer Ford class. By raising
pledge money for each lap completed, the event gave Terri the chance to
focus on two of her loves, auto racing and helping the Racing For Kids
program. Similar efforts as well as a continuation of her hospital visits
are again at the forefront of Terri’s plans in 2000.
