Lois
Pollard-Grant
Racing came at an early age for Lois as she
watched her father, Earl, and brother, Larry
race at Western Speedway in Victoria, B.C.
Canada. When her brother moved to North
Carolina to pursue a NASCAR racing career, Lois talked
her dad out of retirement, to give auto racing a try
with his youngest daughter. So in 1987, at age 21, she
ran her very first race in a borrowed Datsun ministock.
She finished second. Lois has had a mostly successful,
and history making career behind the wheels of a variety
of cars, and has collected more than 40 trophies for her
efforts.
Lois and her dad were the first father/daughter race
team at Western Speedway when they campaigned in the
ministocks in 1988. She was named Rookie of the Year the
same season. She also became the first woman in the
Speedway's then 36 year history to win a main event
which she accomplished as a claimer driver in 1989. The
same year she finished second in the Mini Stock points
championship, and would repeat the honors in 1998. In
1992, Lois drove to a third place finish in Thundercar
championship point standings and also set a new track
record in qualifying the same year. Special moments
for Lois came when she and her family were named for a
perpetual trophy (The Pollard Cup) for the family's
association and support of auto racing. Another special
memory was in 1995, when her dad was inducted into the
Victoria Auto Racing Hall of Fame. In 1999, Lois ran
her final year in the International Ministocks, and half
way through the year, while running third in point
standings, she sold her car and purchased a stockcar.
Although she only competed in half of the scheduled race
events, she still managed to finish sixth in
championship point standings.
Lois took two years off from active racing when a baby
girl was born to her and husband, George Grant. She was
to repeat the same scenario in 2000, when a son was
born.
But
it is now 2002, and Lois is happy to be back behind the
wheel of her race car once again. She wants to be a
front runner. "I've been there before and I want to do
it again." Racing Goals: Lois plans to continue racing
for a long time. "As long as I have my family's support
and I'm still having fun, then I'm there." Lois will
compete in the Glen Lake Inn Stockcar Series until she
makes her move into Late Model Stockcars. But in the
meantime, her ultimate goal is to win a championship.
Personal:. Lois is a freelance writer and has written
for publications in both Canada and the U.S. Her biggest
effort was a 20-page supplement in 1998 on the 45 year
history of Western Speedway for a Victoria publication,
the Goldstream News Gazette. The supplement has since
then been an annual edition. For more information
