Veronica
McCann
A 17 year old racer from Western
Australia is making waves in motorsports down
under.
1992: She started
her racing career at the age of 9 in Sydney N.S.W racing
Honda Odysseys in the 'sub-junior' division.
Winning her first race at age 9 and placed 3rd in
her first crack at the 92'Australian Title.
She continued to race Odysseys in 1993 and took out 3rd overall in the season
championship.
In 1995 her family had moved to Western Australia and
she took up racing in the Junior Sedan division.
Veronica had a string of success from season 95' to 97'
making steady progress.
In season 1998/1999
she was chosen, as the leading competitor in WA to
captain the West Australian team in the West Australia
versus South Australia Challenge. It was also during this season that
she created history by becoming the first female to win a major series title in the 73 year
history of Speedway racing in Western Australia by taking out the
prestigious six round 'Smarter Than Smoking' Junior Sedan series.
Veronica won three of the six major event wins and broke two of the track records at
Claremont Speedway. During the 98' season at Ellenbrook Speedway,
she won eight out of ten feature races for the season and also took out the club championship and the
sportsperson award.
1999/2000:
Veronica again won the 'Smarter Than Smoking' junior series for the second
year running, Taking out 4 of the 6 feature races this season.
In January of 2000, 39 of the states best drivers turned up for the Junior
Sedan State Title. She won all three of my heats which qualified
her from pole position. The top 20 qualifiers from the state
battled it out for twenty laps, with her being
the first across the line thus naming
her the "2000 Western Australian Champion" along with
becoming the first female to win this major event.
Because of her age (17)
she had to progress onto another division seeing as
she was now too old for Juniors. Veronica made the biggest jump possible within
Speedway ranks.... For the 2000/2001 season
she was approached to join West Australia's most
professional 360 Sprintcar team - Allan Nash Racing
(ANR). Allan Nash and herself are campaigning a two car
assault on the 'Wild West Sprintcar Series'. Going from a 65 horsepower Junior Sedan to a 650+ horsepower Sprintcar is a
big step and she is well aware of the massive learning curve that
she is undertaking. But we at racerchicks know
you have the talent and drive to get you
there! Congratulations Veronica!
