What is Mighty Minis? This is a championship for
1.3i single point injection Mini Coopers. It is
run over 14 rounds at circuits such as Brands
Hatch, Silverstone, Rockingham, Donington etc…
The championship comprises of 30+ competitors
with Maria being the only female competitor.
Best result:
1st at Silverstone ‘The Very Fast Show’ (name
of event), in September 2001 (picture from my
lead of that race attached). Out of a full
grid of men, Maria qualified 10th and by lap 5
(out of approx. 10) Maria had joined the front
runners and went on to a very popular and
victorious win!!! Autosport magazine awarded
Maria with ‘Driver of the event’ award, out of
all the racing that weekend. Champoinship
result for 2001: 10th out of 39 (3 non
finishes didn’t help!).
What next for
Maria: Maria has been testing with Bintcliffe
Sport team (owned by ex Touring Car ace John
Bintcliffe) in a Renault Clio with definite
intensions (depending on a sponsor) of
competing in the 2003 Renault Clio Cup that is
part of the TOCA (Touring Car) package,
eventually setting her sights on Touring Cars
in season 2004!
Previous motor
racing: Autograss racing. Maria competed in
husband Jonny’s Class 5 Mini Pick up and went
on to win the British Autograss Class 5 Ladies
Champion award in 1999. Also Maria was highly
competitive in a twin bike engine (2 Yamaha
ex-up engines – 250 bhp) powered single seater
(Autograss car).
Motor racing
hero: Juan Pablo Montoya F1.
Hobbies: racing, racing and racing… anything
motorsport, play pool for a men’s team
(current ladies Harrogate champion 2001/2
as well), support Blackpool Football Club and
often go to the games.
Favourite music: Van Halen, Aerosmith, U2,
1980’s stuff.
Favourite tv prog.: Emmerdale.
Favourite Film(s): Wayne’s World, Scary Movie.
