RACE
DRIVER TAWS MAKING RAPID PROGRESS IN REHAB
March 3, 2003 (Toronto, Ontario): Ashley
Taws, the nineteen-year-old driver of the "Be
Anything With Barbie at Wal-Mart" race car is
improving daily as she battles back from
injuries incurred in a traffic accident,
December 7. The Newmarket, Ontario, resident has
shown great resolve and determination overcoming
serious and painful injuries, including spinal
damage. After spending more than eight weeks
recovering at Saint Michael's Hospital in
Toronto, Taws began her rehabilitation programme
on January 29. At first unable to walk
unassisted due to weakness and lack of mobility
in her left leg, she recently began jogging on a
treadmill and those attending her are almost
certain she will be able to return to her
pre-accident condition. After capturing the
hearts of race fans and Barbie enthusiasts of
all ages last year when she reset records for
women in the Canadian Formula Ford Championship,
Taws was planning to return to the series this
year shooting for the championship.
Unfortunately, those plans have had to be put
off, but the perky teenager intends to race her
famous pink race car before the end of the 2003
season. "Right from the start, one of the
things I thought about most was when I’d be able
to race again," Taws said. "For a while, we
weren't sure if I'd even be able to walk, but
things look really good now. I’m working hard to
get my strength and movement back. I'm very
happy with my progress and I fully expect to
race this season." It is anticipated that Taws
will be sent home in three to four weeks. There
she will try to get back to her regular routine
and continue training for her return to racing. e-mail messages for Ashley can be sent to
