Kelly MacPhaden takes 2003 Rookie
of the Year
Kelly MacPhaden, who competed in the Formula
F1rst championship this past year, out performed
her own expectations considering she just
started racing open wheels this year. Kelly made
a quick transition from recreational indoor
karting last year to jumping behind the wheel of
F2000 where she was encouraged by her racing
instructors to continue with racing. Kelly
participated in a local indoor karting league to
get a taste of racing for the first time. Kelly
found herself up against some fierce competition
and still managed to achieve numerous podium
finishes finally finishing 3rd in the
championship.
MacPhaden entered the Formula F1rst series as
the next step to pursuing her dream. The Ajax
woman finished 2nd in the Formula F1rst
championship and finished 3rd place in the CASC
championship recently. Kelly attests as a rookie
she still has a lot to learn behind the wheel,
although she feels that racing comes naturally
to her. “It was disappointing with all the
problems I had with the car near the end of the
season. I know I can drive; I just needed some
more seat time without mechanical failure.
Although I did well this year, I feel that my
results at the beginning of the year carried me
to the end of the championship. I would like to
thank my crew, sponsors and racers for making me
a better driver and my experience fun. I would
like to especially thank racerchicks.com for all
their assistance and support this year to
helping me cope with the growing pains of a
rookie racer.” Kelly is taking the next step to
her 3 year plan and all is moving perfectly and
faster than she expected.

Racing Season Ends
for Rookie Driver and Demonstrates she is made
for Racing!
October, 2003: Kelly MacPhaden,
the Ajax resident, who only discovered her
racing talents over a year ago, had an
outstanding year in Ontario Regional Racing.
Kelly, not only out performed her own
expectations in her racing abilities, she has
perplexed her friends, and racing colleagues
that she can drive with a competitive spirit.
Kelly has accomplished numerous podium finishes
this year with the brass to prove it!
Although she has had her share of sitting out
due to mechanical failures and not finishing
races, she continually strives at being the best
she can in adverse conditions. Kelly experienced
a collision which almost ended her racing career
earlier on in the season. Continual changes to
the car set ups, engine malfunctions, stormy
weather conditions, coupled with being a first
time open wheel driver, has made her the class
of the field. Her polite demeanor on and off
track is a true testament to a professional in
the making. Kelly's crew chief has even
commented that she has come along way in such a
short period of time as a rookie.
Kelly was the first female to lead the
Formula F1rst championship earlier on in the
season. Kelly was unable to hold on to the lead
due to major mechanical setbacks. Kelly's
transferred her energy to the track and kept her
head up and chalked it up as being racing
growing pains.
"I would like to say thank you to the British
Automobile Racing club, Canadian Automobile
Sports Club, and to my sponsors: Hydraco
Cylinders, Rock Steady Street Graphics, Regalis
Restaurant, Guardsman Security Service, Lanigan
and George Consulting, Reptile Advertising,
Racerchicks, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving
Canada-Toronto Chapter. I am looking forward to
new challenges and a new beginning next year in
taking the next step to my dream".
Kelly is currently in transition to competing
in the Formula Ford Series
