DWD Racing Returns to VIR Stock Car
Spectacular
Danville, Va. (September 1, 2005) –
Danville-based DWD Racing announced today that
it has filed an entry for this weekend’s second
annual Stock Car Spectacular at VIRginia
International Raceway for team owner and driver
Julie Allen.
The team will campaign the No. 51 DWD Racing
Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the US LEC Stock Car
Road Racing Championship event, which is
scheduled for a 45-minute race on Sunday,
September 4. Sponsorship for the effort will be
provided by Sir Richard’s Steakhouse, Sleep Inn
and Worldwide Racing Fuels (Sunoco).
The US LEC Stock Car Road Racing Championship is
a road racing series that utilizes Late Model
Stock Cars that are exactly the same as the Late
Models that fans flock to see at oval tracks all
across America. They feature a NASCAR-style
perimeter frame, a 360ci V8 engine limited to
400 rear-wheel horsepower, fiberglass or steel
bodies, a four-speed transmission, a
quick-change rear end and five-on-five or
wide-five wheels with brakes limited to
four-piston calipers.
In last year’s inaugural Stock Car Spectacular,
the DWD squad overcame a number of mechanical
problems that hampered Allen’s practice and
qualifying efforts to finish in the top 10, an
outstanding result for her first professional
race.
“I learned a lot in last year’s Stock Car
Spectacular,” Allen said, “not the least of
which is that racing stock cars on a road course
is fun! For someone whose prior experience had
been mostly concentrated on vintage sports cars,
it was quite an education. These cars are
powerful, and tricky to drive on the limit, but
they are very entertaining for both the driver
and the fans.
“We had a great turnout of spectators last
year,” she continued, “and I hope even more will
show up this year. VIR is such a beautiful
facility for families to enjoy, and the track is
one of the toughest in America. I was sort of a
novelty last year as the only woman in the
field, and the fans were wonderful to me. I’m
looking forward to putting on a fantastic show
for them again this year, and hopefully we’ll
have an even better result.”
The US LEC Stock Car Road Racing Championship is
scheduled for two practice sessions on Friday
and one on Saturday morning, with qualifying
slated for Saturday afternoon. Sunday’s feature
race will take the green flag at 12:35 p.m.
