DWD Racing to Support Breast Cancer
Awareness in VIR 250
Danville, Va. (Sept. 24) – DWD Racing,
which will compete in the Grand-Am Cup VIR 250
on Oct. 2 at VIRginia International Raceway,
will use its effort to support and raise
awareness of breast cancer research.
Team owner Julie Allen will share the No. 21 DWD
Racing/Nuzzo Motor Sport Mini Cooper S in the
three-hour race with renowned female racer
Divina Galica in the ST class of the Grand-Am
Cup. The team will be sponsored by Sleep Inn,
Sunoco (World Wide Racing Fuels), Sir Richard’s
Steakhouse and Lounge, Comfort Inn, Mary’s
Diner, Superior Electric, VHTA (Virginia
Hospitality & Travel Association), Powers Signs,
Vaden & Associates, Pepsi, Red Bull, KAB
Enterprises and J. Allen & Associates. DWD
Racing will be the only all-female team in the
race.
The DWD Racing entry will display the pink
ribbon for Breast Cancer Awareness. In
recognition of October as National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month, DWD Racing will make a $1
donation for each mile that Galica and Allen
complete; and 10 percent of purchases of
team-logo sportswear and accessories made on the
DWD Racing website during the month of October.
“I am proud that DWD Racing can make a small
contribution towards raising the awareness of
racing fans about the dangers of breast cancer,”
said Allen, “and to help educate them about the
preventive measures that can be taken to avoid
this deadly disease.”
The Pink Ribbon campaign is a function of the
National Breast Cancer Foundation, whose mission
is to save lives by increasing awareness of
breast cancer through education and by providing
mammograms for those in need.
Here is some pertinent information about breast
cancer:
• Every two minutes a woman is diagnosed with
breast cancer.
• This year more than 200,000 new cases of
breast cancer are expected in the United States.
• One woman in eight who lives to age 85 will
develop breast cancer during her lifetime.
• Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in
women between the ages of 40 and 55.
• 1,600 men are expected to be diagnosed with
breast cancer this year and 400 are predicted to
die.
• Seventy percent of all breast cancers are
found through breast self-exams. Not all lumps
are detectable by touch. Regular mammograms and
monthly breast self-exams are recommended.
• Eight out of ten breast lumps are not
cancerous. If you find a lump, don't panic --
call your doctor for an appointment.
• Mammography is a low-dose X-ray examination
that can detect breast cancer up to two years
before it is large enough to be felt.
• When breast cancer is found early, the
five-year survival rate is 96%. This is good
news! Over 2 million breast cancer survivors are
alive in America today.
In 2004, National Mammography Day will be
celebrated on October 15. On this day, or
throughout the month, radiologists will provide
discounted or free screening mammograms.
