Tania Satchwell is
the 2001 AMA/Bel-Ray WML Outdoor Motocross Pro
Champion
Kaide Garrett and
Kimberly Kocher are the new WML Amateur
Champions
(September
4, 2001) Bend, OR: Steffi Laier, of Dielheim,
Germany, came back to America to win both
motos of the final round of the AMA/Bel-Ray
WML Motocross Championship Series held at
Steel City, Delmont, PA. Tania Satchwell went
2-2 to win the WML Championship Title.
The first moto
saw Sarah Whitmore (Yamaha/No Fear/Bel-Ray)
with the holeshot. Laier (KTM) got around
Whitmore quickly and took an early lead in the
race. Satchwell (AGP/Oakley/Bel-Ray) moved
into second position shortly after and looked
strong. Stefy Bau (Honda/Bel-Ray/UFO) came
back from a mid-pack start to take third
place. Satchwell gained two points on Bau,
stretching her lead to 8 points.
The second moto
was held on Sunday at halftime of the
AMA/Chevy Trucks Nationals. Sheena Patterson (sportscenter.com/
Suzuki/Bel-Ray), got the holeshot. Laier,
however, took over the lead by the first
corner, followed by Whitmore, Elin Mann, and
Satchwell. Satchwell worked her way around
Mann and then began a battle with Whitmore for
second place. Satchwell eventually passed
Whitmore and finished second to win the 2001
WML Championship and the $1000 championship
bonus from Bel-Ray. Bau finished 2nd in the
championship, and Patterson finished 3rd
making her the fastest finishing American in
the WML.
In addition,
this weekend Kaide Garrett (Yamaha/Champion
Wheel/Bel-Ray) won the 2001 WML Amateur
Championship and Kimberly Kocher (Kawasaki/Hardings
Park Cycle/Bel-Ray) won the 2001 WML Mini
Championship.
137 women raced
one stop or more of the WML series. Eight
different countries (US, Canada, Italy, New
Zealand, England, Ireland, Sweden, and
Guatamela) were represented in the women's pro
class throughout the season.
The WML is
