Canadian
Motorsport Hall of Fame
The 8th annual induction gala for the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame was
held recently at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel in Toronto. As we know, the
Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame's main objective is to preserve this
country's motorsport heritage. Most of us think Gilles Villeneuve as making
the first contribution -- but we'd be wrong. Since the earliest racing,
Canadians have made an impact on this sport,
so much so, that the Motorsport Hall of Fame is needed to preserve, record and promote the historical
achievements.
This year was especially touching with the induction of Greg Moore, CART
driver so tragically taken from us in a racing mishap. At 24 he will be
remembered as one of Canada's brightest racing stars and a truly remarkable
person on and off the track. To accept this award on behalf of the family -
was none other than Daytona 24 hour winner Ron Fellows,
a hero in his own right and a mentor to many young Canadian drivers.
Anyone who has spent a day at a local track has heard the name Ludwig
Heimrath. A gentleman racer for many years - his name has been associated
with Porsche for as long as anyone can remember. His racing history includes
national titles to running the French Grand Prix in the early sixties. Here
I see a man who with the support and care of his charming wife - has brought
racing fever to a new addiction.
But not just racers were honoured - persons who have contributed to the
sport in other ways are noted. For Example, Dr. Hugh Scully, cardiac
surgeon and race physician. His background in establishing safety standards
for the benefit of all is truly impressive. Called on to be Medical
Director of such prestigious events such as the Canadian Grand Prix - he is
respected internationally. I was certainly honoured to bid against this
inductee at the ever addicting silent auction. Neither of us won the
Formula One historical book - but I made sure to leave my money on a few
other items.
Speaking of money - the Motorsport Hall of Fame looks to fund
raisers such as this evenings and to the generosity of others to run it's
operations. They have worked hard to give recognition to more than 70
outstanding members of the motorsport community - all with nominal financial
support. For more information on how to donate time, money or memorabilia -
feel free to contact them.
Guest
speaker was none other than noted journalist
Brock Yates. Not only was he entertaining and knowledgeable
- he was kind and personable when we
spoke. May I stress that any person that
has driven a Ferrari Daytona at 170mph -
deserves respect and I will always remain a
big fan of this Gumball Rally creator.
Here at racerchicks we recognize what a great effort the Motorsport Hall of
Fame is doing. There are so many inductees that deserve mention here and we
hope to write more about them, the Hall and Canadian Racing - their past,
present and future.
