Welcome
to the Wacky World of Lawnmower Racing
Can you really modify a lawnmower to exceed 60 mph?
Why not? It has 4 wheels and an engine like most other
racing vehicles! Using good old 'seat of the pants'
engineering it is not too hard to do.
Lawnmower Racing is a very structured sport with a
national organization of its own with well over 700
members. The United States Lawn Mower Racing Association
(which can be compared to NASCAR) has a very
comprehensive rule book that one can download at their
web site:
www.LetsMow.com. With Sta-Bil Regionals open to
anyone who owns a lawnmower, hundreds of enthusiasts
have caught the lawn mower racing bug and turned a
weekend chore into a competitive sport.
The
25 member Maryland chapter of the USLMRA has over 20
races on its 2003 schedule which can be viewed at this
web site:
http://elsner.50g.com. Two of the top drivers,
Jackie Andrews and Leah Delp along with our Chief Scorer
are 'racer chicks.' In fact the single cylinder champion
in 2002 was Jackie with nine feature wins. Quite a feat
against the macho males!
An invitation to join this exciting, growing sport is
open to all. |
