RACERS - The Acclaimed story of a Grand Prix year - by Richard Williams
It a rarity when I end up truly surprised at a book. This book proves to
be well written - easy to follow and in depth. Although I suggest some
background in Formula One to familiarize yourself with the drivers and
teams - the author proves to be an enchanting storyteller - bringing us into
the inner most circle. Most touching for me was the discussion about Jacques
Villeneuve in chapter 3 - " Where you thinking about your father" was asked
as he jumped out of his race car. Villeneuve's answer was by far, poignant
and honest. 'No! I don't see why I should have been thinking about my
father! I don't race for him. I race for me, and for my team.' As he spoke
further I realized that although he cared about his father, Jacques
Villeneuve is not caught up in sentimental
jargon.
The skill that the author has in portraying
the truth about Formula One without dwelling
on the obvious politics is outstanding. A must
read for a Formula One fan -- and a good read
for a race fan in general.
