Bite Me Bernie

February 24, 2000 Reuters news agency reported about the now famous interview with Bernie Ecclestone - the reputed leader of the Formula One Grand Prix world.

"In all likelihood they [women] will never get the opportunity [to race F1] because no one will ever take women seriously," Ecclestone stated then followed with "Therefore they're never ever going to get into a competitive race car."

Allow a moment for Racerchick to sharpen her little racing claws. Women are making serious steps forward in the motorsport world. Gone are the days when the only job available was "pit Biscuit" or "track fluff". And the accomplishments of women drivers deserve respect.

Ecclestone goes on about the attitude of the Formula One organization and that no amount of sponsorship can change it; "Whoever she's got [sponsor-wise], it wouldn't make any difference.... Who is going to take a chance? Ferrari can't take a chance." This is from a father of two teenaged daughters. Shame on you Bernie.

It is true that there are too few women involved in the sport but with attitudes like Bernie's, the door is less likely to open. We should work towards getting that chance.

* Note: the most successful female formula one driver was Italian Lella Lombardi who in 1975 finished sixth in the Spanish Grand Prix.
