MOVIE
Review:
2 Fast 2 Furious -
Universal Studios
CAST: Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, Cole
Hauser, Chris "Ludacris" Gibson, Eva Mendes,
Devon Aoki
After leaving the theatre, I felt old and
overdressed.
Paul Walker (Brian O'Connor) is back with his
Keanu Reeves style acting in this summers
sequel to the popular racing movie Fast &
Furious. He's off to catch a money
launderer by becoming a runner. Choosing
his own partner in "crime" he get former
friend and ex-con Roman Pierce (Tyrese) to
drive as well.
The cars are cool, the special effect dazzling
and the actor are all beautiful but what it
lacks is any real sense of the danger
involved. I can only hope it doesn't
give a street racer the thought that he/she
can do the same. From lack of seatbelts
in some scenes, driving in reverse on a
freeway, and games of chicken with other cars
and drivers you leave with a sense of fantasy.
That is what this move is - pure fiction and
fantasy with just a few automotive props.
The frantic filming took away from the beauty
of the workmanship of the cars involved.
For those of us that love a good car chase the
filming took away from really appreciating the
driving involved. Or maybe it was just
their way to make it LOOK faster. While I appreciate the film using a female car
owner/racer in a poor attempt at gender
equality it was faded by the cheap skin shots
of the street racing fluff girls.
It was a funny movie with predictable plot -
reminded me a mix of Tony Montana (from
Scarface) meets "Hot Import Nights". Go
with an open mind knowing you are not going to
have to think hard to understand this film and
the cars - well that's the saving grace for
this film. Around 150 vehicles would get
screen time in the movie but only around
15 would get leading roles. Such cars
featured were the Nissan Skyline GTR - not
available in North America yet, the Mitsubishi
EVO 7 and a Hemi Dodge Challenger just to name
a few.
I do stress - that while the movie may be the
best thing since sliced bread for the young
street racer there. I can only hope that
the generation that is involved in street
racing realize one thing - you want to prove
yourself - try it on a track! It's where
REAL racers. The stunts are just that
stunts: A controlled environment, professional
drivers and safety the number one factor.
