Nika
answers a Racerchick's Question
Help Nika!!! My racing banquet is soon and
I have no idea how to dress! Should I show up
like usual, in a nice pair of pants and a nice
top, or impress the guys and get into a dress
or skirt? I need a racerchick's opinion!
Now here is a question I can answer!
First of all you must find out the dress
code for the banquet. Is it business casual,
black tie, white tie? Business Casual does not
mean sweat pants but nice pants and blouse -
nice suit - something you would feel
comfortable in while working in your office.
Professional is how I would describe it, as if
you are going for a job interview.
Black tie can be tricky. Most people assume
this is extremely formal but in fact it means
both a gown and a cocktail dress is
appropriate. Some pant suits can be worn if
they are detailed with flair. I for one, have
one with rhinestones as clasps on the sweater
and at the cuff of the pant leg. With an
evening purse and accessorized nicely you can
be the belle of the ball. I do suggest a man
should wear a tuxedo or a dark suit. Simple
and classy, racerdudes, PLEASE. Colored bow
ties are for weddings only.....and no Star
Trek, Tweety Bird or Wrestling ties!
White tie, while rare, means formal - floor
length gown and tuxedo. If that is what the
invite states - respect it. Now many of us do
not have the bank account to buy the latest
Christian Dior gown so there are a few
options. Some cities have stores that rent
formal wear for women as well. Think of this -
you in the Versace gown looking like a million
without paying for it. Leave your prom dress
and/or bridesmaid gown in the closet where it
belongs!
Now as for your specific question - First
of all wear what YOU feel comfortable in. You
do not need to impress anyone but yourself.
Being a racerchick means we are relaxed in
Nomex and a dress (not at the same time) It
all depends on the circumstance.
I don't know your specifics so let me give
you this piece of advice. Dress for your age,
body type and personal style. It's horrible to
see a 16 years old trying to look 40 and a 40
year old trying to look 16. I'm not a young
puppy anymore and spandex is not in my closet.
Instead I have clothes that make me look and
feel good. I am not a size 2 and would never
consider trying to fit in a style made for
that size. Dark colors without stripes work
best for larger body types. I also am a fan of
classic style. A Chanel style suit or the
little black dress with some nice jewelry can
work the best for me. See what works for you.
So my racerchick friend - grab some stuff
out of your closet - try it on and whatever
makes you feel the best, you wear. You do not
need to break the bank for style. I've worn
expensive pants with a bargain blouse - it's
all how your work the outfit. So go to your
banquet and dazzle them with your personality
and style - because we're racerchicks and no
matter what clothes we have on ...we rule!
