The Ultimate Off Road Vehicle --
AM General Hummer
For 15 over years the AM General HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled
Vehicle) has been built for U.S. military use across the globe. But in 1991
the "Humvee" as nicknamed by soldiers was finally allowed to be sold to the
public allowing non military personnel to experience the ultimate off road
vehicle available out there. Although Hummer is
capable of crossing streams up to two-and-a-half-feet deep and scaling
ledges up to 18 inches high -- how often would a suburban racerchick need to
do that? Heck - you haven't been to a mall lately or driven the Freeways!!
Racerchicks.com was allowed at up-close view of this production monster
truck recently on a trip to California. Surprising comfortable was my first
impression and not nearly as noisy at speed, as expected. The width of this
truck is something one would have to get used to - I can see my Hummer
without side mirrors my first trip out.
The Turbo Diesel produced enough power to attain cruising speed nicely. The speedometer's top speed says 100
mph but I think 85 is more realistic....this isn't a sportscar by any
stretch of the imagination darling! It rattled a bit inside and the wind
could clearly be heard but as for the Hummer's durability remember one of
the vehicle's original design requirements was a 12-year life span under
combat conditions - the equivalent of 12 years under general racerchick
driving. Although we did not get a chance to test this baby in snow or
sand - we could tell it has the talent to conquer both with ease. The
Hummer Turbo Diesel is on my wish list and not just because of the color!!
The 2000 AM General Hummer is available in five trims: Hard Top 2-Door, Hard
Top 4-Door, Open Top, Wagon, and Slant Back. Power comes from a
turbodiesel V8 engine that produces 195 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. All Hummers
feature 16 inches of ground clearance and come standard with an automatic
transmission, full-time 4WD, power windows and door locks, air conditioning,
an AM/FM stereo cassette, and an auxiliary fuel tank. Options include a
trailer-towing system, cruise control, a heated windshield, a Monsoon sound
